Interview: Roberto Rodriguez
Roberto Rodriguez is an artist who’s been instrumental in shaping the Scandinavian house and techno landscape since the 90′s through releases on labels like Compost, Freerange, Eskimo and Delusions Of Grandeur. In 2011 he started his own platform called Serenades. The label has just released his debut album called 'Dawn', causing a huge hype at the moment. It shows the diversity of Roberto, ranging from classic deep house to spaced-out disco over to clubby pop music. If we are talking about contemporary house music and its various styles, there is no way of avoiding Roberto Rodriguez .. aka Manolo .. aka the Future Beat Investigator .. aka Acid Kings… influenced by the Detroit Black Movement and the European Summer of Love, the scandinavian protagonists are going to become the most influential artists in the new century.
As an international DJ, Roberto Rodriguez has been relying on his Otus controller for his DJ gigs. Here is a short interview on the man whose Otus has more than enough airmiles.
When did you start using Otus?
I started using Otus in my dj sets in january 2009. The first gig with it was in Georgia.
We know you are busy travelling around the world DJing. How many countries has your Otus seen?
My Otus has around 3-5 gigs in 2-4 countries per month.
During the time i've been using Otus, it has seen 25 different countries and about 70 cities.
What do you like best about your Otus?
I just love it because its just a great CDJ substitute in the digital world. It has all the usual controls of a cdj, plus much more. Its very well built with a sturdy chassis and doesn't feel as plastic as some other controllers. The size and the weight of it makes it a very handy tool for a traveling dj.
What i love the most about the Otus is that it has a sound card with two outputs. One for the left and one for the right deck. So it allows me to do my work on the professional club mixer instead of using the controller as a mixer.
Which mapping do you use?
I have found the official EKS mapping from the website to be the most convenient one for me.
What is your regular gear set-up and what other gear do you use?
For djing outside Finland my setup consists of only two things; my Mac Book Pro 17" and Otus.
I then plug Otus to what ever mixer the club happens to have. I prefer the rotary mixers such as Rane 2016.
One thing that is on my wish list for the future to include in my setup is the E & S DJR 400 portable rotary mixer which i could always take with me.
Any memorable trips with Otus that you would like to share?
Actually as it happens, it was the first ever gig i did with Otus. I had a gig in Georgia which had just had the war with Russia a few months prior to my visit. It turned out i had to get a separate war zone traveling insurance for the trip. All went well. The club and the crowd was great and i had a really good time. The local cuisine really blew me away. Fantastic food.
We know Otus can be of interest to airport security. Have you noticed this?
Usually when i place the Otus on the security line at the airport, the security guys just start to scratch with the jog wheel and talk about djing. But every time i fly from a german airport i end up in a special inspection. I guess its a device they don't see every day and they just want to be sure. They use a small vacuum cleaner like device to suck some particles from the top of Otus which they then put inside an analyzer that checks if there are any radiation. But all this is over in 5 minutes and i get to have some funny discussions about the device.
