XP5 pitch resolution: Easy Question for owners

10 messages - 1028 views
Hello, What is the pitch resolution of the pitch fader? I want to buy 2 of these for use with VirtualDJ and wanted to make sure ahead of time that these could make fine pitch adjustments. I plan to use the +/-6% scale in Virtual DJ, can someone please tell me what the increment change in pitch for each movement of the fader would be using that +/-6% scale? I'm hoping it's something like 0.02% increments. Thanks!
Hi there,

I use traktor now but you can set your pitch range in virtualdj settings.

i have the xp10's the pitch fader's are awesome (same on the XP5) nice and smooth just like the pitch fader's on an pioneer cdj player.

I understand that you can set pitch *ranges* in all DJ software. I will be using VirtualDJ, which just like Traktor, has the narrowest band of pitch ranges available as +6% to -6%.

What I'm trying to find out is what that works out to in pitch *change* per incremental "nudge" of the pitch fader. Does the tempo go up 0.02% (Like a CDJ-400), or 0.05% (like a CDJ-800), or maybe 0.1% (like a VCI-100), or some other increment?

Thanks!
Whatever increment the pitch moves up or down by would be the final "pitch resolution" which is actually advertised on most controllers and CDJs.

Examples:

Pioneer CDJ-400 Pitch Resolution: 0.02% in +/-6%
Denon DN-S5000 Pitch Resolution: 0.02% in +/-6%
Vestax VCI-100 Pitch Resolution: 0.1% in +/- 6%
etc
If you can help me answer this in Traktor, simply set the range in Traktor to +/-6% and nudge the fader a tiny bit up or down and tell me what the tempo changes from 0.
i think it is 0.05% because the pitch fader is very accurate and 100mm large or small it is how you see it.

it is an nice controller and the jogweel is very very nice and smooth.
aspecialy the touch top of the weel.

Thanks man. I keep hearing different ranges, but that's OK, I gave in and ordered a pair yesterday from AGIProDJ.com for $306US shipped.

I'll try to get more exacting info out there on them, perhaps more close-ups and a full review, since I searched all over and the reviews were all really thin on specs.
i was able to see 0.03 % steps on a +-8% scale in scratchlive

so i did some basic math:
16 / 0.03 = 533.33
lets take the closest power of 2. that is 512 = 2^9. so i assume the device uses 9 bits.

on a +- 6 % scale that would mean 12 / 512 = 0.023.. % so you can safely round that to 0.02.

conclusion:
same accuracy as pioneer and denon you mentioned,
and probably one bit less then the vestax you mentioned
(if what they say is true - 0.01 % can only be true if vestax uses 10 bits instead of 9:
12 / 1024 = 0.011...% )

for me it is perfectly enough as it is. i doubt i could feel the extra 0.01 percent if i don't see it on the screen.
i tried to find the 0.01% and then noticed it was 0.1 instead of 0.01 for the vestax device.

so the XP5 is in fact better or equal than all of the products you mentioned regarding the pitch slider.
Standart Midi Range is 0-127 (Only 128 gradations of the parameter)... So 6% or 8% or more range needed simly to devide by 128 for the accuracy results. For better accuracy needed more bits of the midi messages (12-14 or more). If extended midi driver would be written for XP series too (Otus have 14 bit driver?), than accuracy of Its pitch would be better than all Pioneer CDJ... 100 MM, FINELY CONSTRUCTED PITCH FADER ! (AND VERY COMFORTABLE BIG JOG ! TOO), IMHO, MUST BE AT MINIMUM EQUAL OR MORE DETAILED & SHARP THAN THE CDJs. Standart midi 128 so very poor for digital DJing in the 21st century... Extended midi for XP series controllers may would blowing the second life for its owners, if marketters & supportters do that for EKS community! ))
Sorry for poor english, cheers, waiting for aswer from support! See Ya.
